Charles A. Herrman, a German native, founded the Penn Yan Boat Company, in Penn Yan, NY in 1921. The company built a wide range of wooden boats and canoes. It was best known for a light weight and narrow row boat, which two people could easily lift onto their car for transport, developed in 1936. In the 1960’s, the Penn Yan Boat Company re-organized, switching production to all fiberglass boats. The company sold in 1979 and ceased operation in 2001.
